The St. Anthony's Learn-to-Row program is for St. Anthony's students. It is intended and designed to introduce incoming St. Anthony's students to the enjoyment that can be found in the sport of rowing, whether the individual is interested in increasing their basic fitness or progressing to competitive rowing as a member of our team. During the session, students are taught water safety, boat handling, and rowing technique by experienced coaches. Our sessions are a healthy combination of land based instructions and rowing on the water. The session begins with a Safety Video, followed by a swim test and land based instruction on rowing machines. After the individual has had a chance to understand and have comfort with the basic mechanics of the stroke, we bring a boat to the dock and let them get the feel of rowing in the boat.... while still at the dock. This is where the excitement for the sport of rowing usually gets its initial spark. Once the coach feels that it is safe to row, the newly formed "novice" crew pushes off of the dock for their first row. Not to worry, the boat will always contain experienced rowers so the students can use them as examples. Coaching is done from an accompanying launch. We also utilize video taping to help the students further understand the stroke and their personal development needs. | ||||||||||||||||||
